Lessons from Giving USA 2011: Be a tortoise, not a hare

June 21, 2011

The much anticipated Giving USA 2011 report is out and, while the news of a modest 2% overall increase in giving isn’t exactly cause for celebration, there are a few key indicators that nonprofits who adhere to a slow and steady approach will emerge victorious.

Individual giving rose an estimated 2.7%, while bequest giving rose an estimated 18.8% in 2010.  If you’re focusing your efforts where you should be, on sound donor-centric fundraising, stewardship and growing your monthly giving program program your organization can expect to achieve a sustainable funding model.

And, while foundation giving only remained steady, family foundations provided 48% of all grants by independent, community, and operating foundations and accounted for $41 billion in total.  Download the Giving USA 2011 report here.
