Your fundraising success is mostly a matter of decision

June 14, 2011

Remember, a real decision is measured by the fact that you’ve taken new action. If there’s no action, you haven’t truly decided.
Tony Robbins

For successful fundraising, you’ll need to break free of your old reacting and responding mode and switch to the assertive proactive mode.  Make a commitment here and now to reject the entire idea of limited choices.  So how can you be more assertive, proactive and creative in your fundraising?

What can you do today, right now, to increase your donors tomorrow?

  1. Spend 30 minutes on the phone with donors.  Go ahead, pull three to five names out of your database and begin calling donors to thank them for their past gift.  At first you may feel a little awkward.  As fundraiser Dan Blakemore recently noted on Twitter “It’s so interesting how donors are always surprised and put off balance when they get a thank you call.”  I know that I’ve never received one and this is one area where the small shop can shine.  And once you make calling past donors a regular habit, you’ll find that it’s an inspiring part of your day.
  2. Limited budget?  This tip came straight from the master of direct mail himself, Mal Warwick, during a tele-seminar last year:
Do a few queries of your database. Look for your most loyal donors and look for those donors who gave in excess of a set amount. Then pick up the phone and ask them to give you the name and addresses of three people who might be really interested in your work. Ask permission to use their name and send out a letter of introduction. Simple as that!
  3. Treat your donors like rockstars.  Don’t know how?  Download my free ebook, The Lifetime Donor Attraction System and create your own calendar for “wowing” donors.
  4. Spend some time on the phone calling your foundation funders.  Explain that you’re looking to broaden your base of foundation support and ask them for their recommendations of potential funders who might support your mission.
