What’s in my Inbox | Handling declined credit card payments

How are small nonprofit organizations using the power of email to love their donors? Join us every Tuesday for What’s in my Inbox.

I made a recurring donation to Brittany’s Hope Foundation earlier this year as part of my “Two Gifts a Week” online mystery shopping experiment.  The donation experience was so seamless from start to finish, that John Haydon and I recorded a short training with Brittany’s Hope’s Aaron Fogelman to learn more about their processes.

Fast forward: Following a local business security breach, I found all of my credit cards compromised, and many recurring payments falling through the cracks.  That’s when Brittany’s Hope followed up with this charming and heartfelt email.

How does your organization handle expired or declined credit card payments?

There are lessons, too, in Brittany’s Hope’s redirect page following my (renewed) donation, including a clear indication of what you can expect by way of follow up, and social media links.
