The Power of Non-Profit Storytelling | British Heart Foundation knocks it out of the park

The British Heart Foundation’s recent campaign packs one heck of a hard-hitting, emotional punch, driving their point home: heart disease is devastating.

And heart disease is particularly devastating in how it can impact your children, forever changing their lives. This point is illustrated in a brutally honest way, through a narrative depicting a brief father and son interaction, brought to life within the walls of a dreary yet average grade school classroom, where students are hunkered down, working quietly and diligently.

The young boy looks up to see his father standing before him. “Dad, what are you doing here?” he asks.

“I can’t come home tonight,” Dad responds.

As the conversation between young Ben and Dad unfolds, we come to understand that this interaction between father and son is no ordinary exchange. For one thing, it will be their last. At the end of their dialogue, Ben looks up, confused. His father has vanished as quickly as he appeared and a principal appears in the doorway.

“Ben? Can you come with me, please?” he asks. By this point, we know something heartbreaking is about to happen. That it probably already has happened.

Ben meets his mother in the principal’s office. We don’t have to see her face to know that she’s crying. She embraces Ben in a hug, and they grieve together.

As if Ben’s story didn’t make it clear, BHF drives their point home one more time. But they also take it a step further and tell us how we can help…

Heart disease is heartless. It strikes without warning.

But with your support our research can help end the devastation.

The video clocks in at one minute, offering proof that you don’t need much time to create a serious emotional impact that affects hearts and minds. I’m sure it has even gone on to inspire some real change — the kind of change that matters. Because no loving parent would ever want their child in Ben’s position, ever.

BHF, an organization that has employed emotional storytelling in the past, really knocked it out of the park with this one — and then some.
