Color of Change is a progressive organization advocating for civil rights. The nonprofit was founded shortly after Hurricane Katrina in order to strengthen the voices of African American people, which is primarily done through online communications and resources — especially email. CoC’s emails consistently result in an emotional, heartfelt reaction in me, moving me to want to help in any way I can. And their most recent email is no exception.

By now, everyone knows the story of Michael Brown. And I’ve seen Michael used as an example to illustrate a nationwide problem that is seemingly becoming worse: police brutality against minorities. But never like this. Told through a series of headlines and images, each one is jarring. Each one jolted me to reality and showed me how not as much has changed as we’d like to believe. It’s a seriously impactful kind of storytelling because even after reading the words, Michael’s narrative, a piece of a much larger narrative, stayed with me for days.

It’s about the lives lost, and it’s about using voices to fight a hard battle, a battle that is working toward challenging and changing established institutions of authority in order make the world a safer place. More than 40 policing laws in 24 states have been passed, and there have even been some indictments. Without CoC working tirelessly to make their voices heard, without them reaching out to you and me, without them pushing, protesting, and caring enough to do what they do, the change wouldn’t happen. It couldn’t. And thanks to them, I now have more hope. Click the image to download the email.
