What’s in My Inbox | Staying Human-Centered in an AI World

April 25, 2024

The growth of AI in nonprofit donor communications means that lately my inbox has been filled to the brim with nonsense like this:

We hope this message finds you well and filled with the same warmth and gratitude that we feel as we reach out to express our deepest thanks for your unwavering support of XYZ.

Your commitment to making a positive impact in our community has been nothing short of inspiring, and we are genuinely grateful for the trust and generosity you continue to show. Your contributions have allowed us to make significant strides in addressing pressing needs, supporting vital programs, and fostering positive change.

In other words, false, uninspiring, robotic, and most definitely not how I would communicate with a friend.

Take a cue from Christian Legal Aid of DC, a nonprofit offering free legal services in the Washington, DC area. Their Executive Director, Whitney King, consistently communicates with her supporters with charismatic warmth and empathy. Even this invitation reads like a personal note from a dear friend.
