James Corden’s Late Late Show is largely responsible for inspiring the viral trend that is carpool karaoke. From Adele, to First Lady Michelle Obama, to the cast of the musical Hamilton, many a familiar face has rocked out in a jubilant sing-a-long sesh within the confines of James Corden’s vehicle. And for the most part, the Internet’s response has been equally joyful, from millions of positive Youtube video comments, to fans uploading their own carpool karaoke jam videos, to a man named Ted McDermott achieving carpool karaoke stardom.

Wait a minute… Who is Ted McDermott?

Ted is an octogenarian who has led a rich, fascinating life, and the narrative that is his personal history provides a backdrop and context for the video you’re about to see. A fresh 80 years young, this former Butlin’s Redcoat is father to his biggest supporter Simon, 40, and was a singer and an entertainer throughout clubs all across England during his younger days. Today, the Internet knows Ted as The Songaminute Man.

Three years ago, Ted was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, and his family had to brace themselves for his violent outbursts, both verbal and physical. Today, Ted struggles to recognize Simon, but when Ted sings, everyone listens. Because for him, along with his family, it is a return to joy, and they collectively treasure that. Especially now.

Through a fundraising campaign for Alzheimer’s Society on the fundraising platform JustGiving, Ted and his family have invited others to not partake in their joyous moments, but to step up and raise money for an important cause. Alzheimer’s disease affects millions, from the individuals who suffer, to the families who are mentally and emotionally burdened by it.

Through finding a space on Facebook to share Ted’s life, story, and music, his son has enabled him to reach thousands of people in an inspiring, emotionally compelling way, and in response, those in Ted’s audience have given thousands upon thousands of in donations. The results as of right now, according to the JustGiving page, are 10319%, or £103192.00, totally smashing the original goal of £1000.00.

This is a testament to so many things, and then some. It’s a testament to the positive power of music, and the relationship between music and joy. It’s proof that an emotionally compelling story, whether by word or by video, has the power to move mountains — or at least go viral and resonate with the masses, spurring collective action of a life-changing variety. It’s a testament to how an abundance of empathy, love, and a willingness to band together can create positive change that resonates all around the world.

And it’s the testament to the unwavering, loving bond between a father and his son. A father and his family.

Really, I could go on and on. But just watch…
